ALL THINGS CRAFT

Crochet

Crochet is a fiber craft technique for creating textiles by using a single crochet hook to interlock / knot loops of yarn or thread, forming a fabric. Unlike knitting, where multiple stitches are open on needles at once, each crochet stitch is completed before the next is started. Crochet can be used to make a wide range of items, from clothing and accessories to intricate lace, decorative pieces, and even stuffed toys. Fun fact: when making plush toys it is called Amigurumi. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting, stuffed yarn creatures and objects, such as animals, food, or characters. The word is a combination of the Japanese words "ami" (knitted or crocheted) and "kurumi" (wrapping) or "nuigurumi" (stuffed doll).

Common mistakes

Misinformation are a common thing in every art form. However when it comes to popular fiber crafts such as crocheting and knitting there is one mistake that always stands out above them all, and that is simply the difference between crochet and knitting. Many people call crocheting knitting and knitting crocheting, which can be frustrating for those who do either craft. Knitting and crocheting are two very different crafts! The #1 difference between them is that with knitting, you use two long sticks called knitting needles, and with crochet you use 1 hook, about half the length of a knitting needle. Fun fact: Knitting can be reproduced using machines where as crocheting cannot be mass produced and can only be done by hand!

Knitting

Knitting is the process of creating patterned fabric by interlacing loops of yarn to form connected stitches using two or more needles. This craft is done by hand or by machine-based methods. Knitting produces textiles with stretch and warmth. The knitted product is formed from individual loops that link together to create rows. Similar to crochet, you can also knit in the round, however the process is very different than crocheting in the round. When knitting in the round you use 'circular needles' which resemble two knitting needles tied end to end together with a plastic cord from the flat end of the knitting needle.
